It all began in 2013 with a single zebra design, painstakingly created by Carlo. What made this artwork truly distinctive was the way the zebra’s own stripes extend beyond its body, flowing outward to fill the surrounding space. The pattern itself becomes the artwork, creating a bold and instantly recognisable design.
The uniqueness of this first piece inspired us to start a small husband-and-wife business. However, it soon became clear that one design alone would not be enough. As he always does, Carlo devoted his time and creativity to developing additional artworks based on the same concept.
The giraffe came next, followed by the leopard, then the rhino, elephant, and finally the wild dog. Each design was created using the animal’s natural markings — stripes, spots, and textures — allowing these patterns to extend beyond the animal’s form and define the composition. This approach is what gives our designs their distinctive and timeless character.
With a growing collection of original artworks, we were able to compile our first catalogue. Our next step was to find a local supplier capable of producing high-quality T-shirts that would do justice to the designs. Under the name Art of Design, we officially opened for business.
We began by reaching out to game lodges, where we showcased our designs and shared the story behind the artwork.
