One explanation for the South African word Takkie is Onomatopoeia. The rubber soles of the shoes would melt on the hot roads and become Tacky. Another explanation is that it's a reclaimed Afrikaans word. The British colonials used to refer to running shoes in a snobby way as Tacky, and uncouth.
